WOD’ing & Scuba Diving

crossfit and scuba diving

The wonderful thing about Agila Strong’s location on Malapascua Island is the easy access we have to the ocean for a myriad of watersports like open water swimming, stand-up paddleboarding , kayaking, snorkelling, and scuba diving. These are all excellent activities on rest and recovery days between trainings.

Something to consider, however, is the relationship of scuba diving to intense workouts. As a rule, we suggest athletes wait at least 6 hours before engaging in strenuous activities after scuba diving.

According to an article written by Neal Pollock, Ph.D. and posted on Divers Alert Network (DAN),

“Intense physical activity too close to diving may therefore be problematic. Physical activity after diving may also stimulate additional bubble formation, possibly through a combination of increased micronuclei activity and increased joint forces.”

In short, there is a real possibility that excess nitrogen bubbles in an athlete’s blood stream after scuba diving can have an adverse effect when paired with strenuous exercise. Rather than risk an unfavourable reaction, it is always a wise choice to give yourself a 6 hour window to allow your body to off-gas adequately.

In general, being healthy and in relative good shape is an excellent complement to the sport of scuba diving. Just keep in mind that you need to give your body a chance to recover after diving before you run over to Agila Strong for a WOD.
